Part 1-Before the Words: Where Silence Becomes the First Language
There are books that begin with a sentence.
But some books begin long before language ever appears.
I hate my mother — Fragments for those who did not have the words is one of those rare works whose true origin lies in silence. Across its English, French, and Ukrainian editions, one truth remains constant: before the author could speak, before trauma had vocabulary, before memory had structure, there was only the body surviving what the mouth could not name.
The opening lines of each version echo the same heartbeat:
“This book was born out of silence.”
“Ця книга народилася з тиші.”
“Ce livre est né du silence.”
Silence is not absence here — it is the first witness.
